SGB signed an extension of the Membership and Cooperation Contract with the Indonesia Packaging Recovery Organization (IPRO) to collect and recycle hundreds of tons of PP plastic waste

Jakarta, Indonesia, September 14, 2023 – Suntory Garuda Beverage (SGB) has reinforced its commitment to tackle plastic waste across the entire value chain. This commitment was marked by the signing of a contract extension by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) & President Director of SGB, Neeraj Goyal, and Chairman of the IPRO Supervisory Board, Karyanto Wibowo. The forum which took place at the SGB Head Office in South Jakarta was attended by members of the IPRO Supervisory Board and Trustees.
Joining as an IPRO member since 2022, Suntory Garuda Beverage (SGB) has succeeded in collecting and recycling hundreds of tons of polypropylene (PP) plastic waste in Indonesia. This initiative is also included in the Waste Reduction Roadmap which was prepared in accordance with Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation 75/2019 to achieve a 30% waste reduction by 2030.
SGB is the renowned producer of soft drinks in cup packaging in Indonesia with the parent company Suntory Group headquartered in Tokyo, Japan. The two brands of soft drinks in cup packaging produced by SGB are OKKY jelly and Mountea ready-to-drink tea. OKKY and Mountea packaging is made from PP plastic.

Neeraj Goyal, Chief Executive Officer & President Director, PT Suntory Garuda Beverage, says, “We are one of the largest producers of soft drink RTD cup in Indonesia. The two brands of RTD cup that we produce are OKKY jelly and Mountea ready-to-drink tea where the cup packaging is made from PP plastic that safe and maintains product quality until it reaches consumers. In line with the Suntory Group Plastics Policy, SGB is committed for proactive efforts to reduce the generation of packaging waste, as well as collect and recycle plastic waste in a sustainable manner.”

General Manager IPRO Zul Martini Indrawati, appreciate the commitment of Suntory Garuda Beverage (SGB) "We also partner with relevant stakeholders including companies, collectors, recyclers, government, academics, civil society, application developers and others to increase the involvement of all parties in waste management.” she said.
“SGB post-consumer packaging waste which mostly uses PP plastic, can be recycled into various daily necessities. In 2023, IPRO continues to expand partnerships both in Java and Outside Java to ensure more PP post-use packaging can be recalled and recycled.” Martini added.
Inclusively, IPRO invites producers, brand owners, retailers, as well as representatives from government, industry associations and educational institutions to jointly manage waste and provide positive examples of effective Extended Stakeholder Responsibility (ESR) for other transition economies, encouraging fair competition among brands, retailers and packaging manufacturers. IPRO is also actively shaping Indonesia's waste management system, advocating for fair and effective regulations.

For products in cup packaging, Suntory Garuda innovates by using lighter plastic materials and recycling packaging waste into plastic pallets which are used in raw material warehouses and finished product storage centers. Through Mizuiku, an educational program to preserve clean water and the environment, currently SGB is also the only private company in Indonesia that focuses and consistently strives to provide education to Indonesian children, teachers, and community to understand how important it is to maintain clean water and the environment.

IPRO is an initiative of companies that joined the Packaging and Recycling Association for a Sustainable Environment (PRAISE) which later became IPRO's founding members, namely Coca Cola Indonesia, Danone Indonesia, Indofood Sukses Makmur Tbk, Nestle Indonesia, Tetra Pak Indonesia and Unilever.
